Protein Shamrock Shake

A Guilt-Free, Healthier Alternative to McDonald’s Classic. The Protein Shamrock Shake is a delightful and nutritious spin on the iconic McDonald’s Shamrock Shake, which has captivated taste buds for decades. With its creamy, minty flavor and vibrant green hue, the original shake has become a symbol of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. However, it’s no secret that the McDonald’s version is far from the best choice for those trying to lose weight through a calorie deficit. The shamrock shake is an indulgence than a guilt-free treat. That’s where the Protein Shamrock Shake steps in, offering a more wholesome and satisfying alternative without sacrificing flavor.

One of the main advantages of the Protein Shamrock Shake is its improved nutritional profile. It contains significantly fewer calories than the McDonald’s version, making it a smarter choice for those trying to lose weight or just trying to get their protein intake up. Additionally, the shake incorporates protein powder, which not only increases the protein content but promotes a feeling of fullness, which can help with portion control and prevent overeating.

ADD MORE PROTEIN TO YOUR DIET

We all hear protein this, protein that, blah blah blah more protein blah but why do we actually need more?

Protein, the nutrient powerhouse, is your ultimate friend in shedding those extra pounds. Why? It keeps you full and satisfied, so you can wave goodbye to hunger pangs and say hello to a slimmer you.

But wait, there’s more! Protein revs up your metabolism like a high-octane sports car, meaning you’ll burn calories faster than a rocket launch. Talk about a thrilling boost to your weight loss journey! Protein can burn as high as 30% of the calories during digestion compared to carbs which are between 5-10% and fats which are 0-3% on a good day. What this means is, if you eat more protein, you can eat more food in general and still lose weight.

And don’t forget, protein is the MVP of muscle-building. More muscle means a higher metabolic rate, even at rest. So, fuel up on protein and watch as your body transforms into a calorie-incinerating machine!

WHY MAKE THIS PROTEIN SHAMROCK SHAKE

The Shamrock Shake, a mint-flavored, limited-time offering from McDonald’s, has garnered a devoted fan base for its unique taste and festive appearance. Its delightful combination of creamy, cold vanilla ice cream, and refreshing mint syrup creates a harmonious balance that tantalizes the taste buds. The shake’s vibrant green hue adds a visual appeal, making it a perfect treat to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day season.

The only problem with it? It is 800 calories for a large. This can easily blow through half your entire daily budget of calories if you are trying to stay in a calorie deficit. This quick and easy hack will cut down on a large portion of the calories without sacrificing on any of the taste.

INGREDIENTS

Nicks Vanilla Ice Cream – You can use whatever low calorie vanilla you can find! Halo top is also a great option.

Unsweetened Almond Milk – You can substitute this out for other milks, I use unsweetened almond milk because we buy it in bulk from Costco and it’s the lowest calorie

Mint Extract – Don’t skip this but also don’t use too much, This gives you the signature shamrock shake flavor.

Green food Coloring – If you have an aversion to food colorings you could skip this but what’s the fun in a non-green protein shamrock shake?

Vanilla Protein Powder – I use PEScience, use any protein powder you have on hand, just make sure it’s vanilla!

Optional: Fat free whipped cream & green sprinkles!

DIRECTIONS TO MAKE THE BEST PROTEIN SHAMROCK SHAKE

Add in all ingredients to a blender.

Make sure not to add in any extra mint extract. Theres a fine line between mint flavor and toothpaste flavor here.

Blend until smooth, top with fat free whipped cream and green sprinkles.

WHAT’S THE BEST PROTEIN POWDER TO USE?

There are several types of protein powders you can use, each with unique benefits. One of our favorite whey-casein blends is PEScience protein powders. PEScience can be readily found at most local vitamin stores if you are in a pinch or ordered online to be delivered right to your door. In this specific recipe the type of protein powder you use doesn’t matter, just make sure it’s vanilla flavored!

If you don’t want to use a powder you can substitute a premixed protein shake for the protein powder and the almond milk in this.

Popular types of proteins and their benefits are:

Whey protein:

  • Complete protein with all essential amino acids
  • Fast-absorbing and easily digestible
  • Enhances muscle growth and recovery
  • Supports weight loss by increasing satiety

Casein protein:

  • Complete protein with all essential amino acids
  • Slow-digesting, providing a sustained release of amino acids
  • Supports muscle recovery and growth during sleep
  • Promotes satiety and may aid in weight management

Soy protein:

  • Plant-based complete protein with all essential amino acids
  • Supports muscle growth and recovery
  • Suitable for vegans and those with lactose intolerance

Pea protein:

  • High-quality plant-based protein with a well-balanced amino acid profile
  • Hypoallergenic and easily digestible
  • Supports muscle growth and recovery
  • Suitable for vegans and those with soy or dairy allergies

Collagen protein:

  • Supports skin, hair, nails, joints, and bone health
  • Improves gut health and digestion
  • Not a complete protein, but provides unique amino acids. Should not be used to replace Whey/Casein/Soy/Pea Proteins.
